Work Heartily As Unto The Lord
Some years ago, I worked for a Fortune 500 company. After only about a year with the company, we went through a reorganization. As a result, many of my peers were laid off leaving me to manage the team that was left. Feeling unprepared and underpaid, I complained and determined that I would not take on a position that I was not being compensated for. I made my feelings known to management and to anyone who would listen. So when I was approached by my manager and told that I was to oversee the work done by one of my peers, I was livid and had to step away to regain my composure.
While fuming and murmuring under my breath, I remembered a message from a well-known Pastor. In his message, he quoted the scripture, “Whoso findeth a wife, findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favor from the Lord.” (Proverbs 18:22). The Pastor’s interpretation resonated deeply: a woman possesses “wife qualities” before marriage – she doesn’t wait for a title to embody the role. This sparked a realization: “Managers are managers before they have the title of manager.” Instantly, I understood the spiritual implication – this was an opportunity to embody the qualities of a manager, potentially, paving the way for future promotion.
Following my shift in perspective, I proactively developed and implemented a plan to address areas impacted by the recent reorganization. This included developing solutions for areas needing attention and supporting colleagues with backlogged tasks. Unbeknownst to me, my contributions were observed and rewarded by our Vice-President at the annual awards banquet. I was both surprised and blessed as everyone in the room stood and applauded. I could not hold back the tears. Only a few months later, I was offered the job as Administrative Office Manager and Executive Assistant to the GM.
Friends, the bible teaches, “Do all work, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. (Colossians 3:23) Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ”. God is not pleased with complaining spirits and mediocre efforts. We should always do our very best knowing that God is watching and has the power to increase or decrease.
Now friends, what about you? Would your colleagues say that you are a hard worker? Do you arrive on time and work the hours that you are scheduled to work? Do you have a good attitude and are you willing to assist where needed? If so, well done! If not, now is the time to make a change. Seek God’s help. Immerse yourself in His Word, for it is living and transformative. As you avail yourself to its truth, a profound shift in perspective awaits you. Trust Him! He will not fail.

For His Glory,
Tahnee
