For Customers Only

I was fortunate to work for a tutoring company for many years. I started as a tutor then was promoted to Education Director and promoted again to Center Director. During my years as Center Director, I struggled in my relationship with the Lord. I vacillated-going from obsessively obedient to disobedient. For instance, the parking area directly in front of the building was reserved for our customers. However, day after day, I parked in the spot right in front of the door. One day as I was pulling in I was convicted by the Holy Spirit. He said “How long will you waver between two opinions?” (1 Kings 18:21) “Hmm”’, I thought.

In this 1 Kings passage of scripture, Elijah confronted both the prophets of the idol gods, Baal and Asherah and those who were supposed to be God’s children. He asked them the same question, “How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions?” He told them, “If the Lord is God, follow Him! But if Baal is God, follow him!”. The Bible says that the people were completely silent (1 Kings 18:20-21). The silence was because the people did not know if God was God. Their behavior reflected people who were confused – serving God when it was convenient or beneficial to them. That is exactly what I was doing.

See, on days that I arrived early, I parked away from the building because I could leisurely walk to the office. However, when I was running late or it was raining, it was much more convenient to park close to the door. While I knew what I should have done, day after day I chose convenience over God. I realized that day that my everyday choices showed who God was in my life. I could choose to serve Him, the true and living God, or myself. See, I was the idol god that I obeyed most days and God was not pleased.

Friends, some people would consider this as a small thing. What is the big deal about parking in front of the door? I mean you are the Center Director. Here is the big deal; I was told that space was for customers only-not for me. And, on days that the owners were there, I did not park there. See, it’s a matter of truth, integrity, and honesty. My worship was lip service but my heart was far from God.

Friends, what about you? Who is God over your life? Is it you, your family, your job, or is it the true and living God. Don’t know? Here are a few questions you can ask yourself?

  1. Do I think about God during my day?
  2. Do I know what His word says and do I obey it?
  3. Am I heartbroken when I sin?
  4. Do I consult the Word of God before making decisions?
  5. When confronted by God, do I make excuses or humbly submit?
  6. Am I teachable?
  7. Do I read the Bible and and attend worship services?
  8. Do I give regularly to the things of God?
  9. How much time do I give God?
  10. Does my love for God show in how I treat others and how I serve Him when no one is looking? Is my worship lip-service only?

That day, I prayed for God’s forgiveness and I settled some things with Him. I chose to do it His way and not mine. Have you made that decision?

I would love to hear about your journey. Email me at [email protected] or simply go to our contact us page.

For God’s Glory,
