Me, Me, Me

Spread the love

Me, Me, Me

As my time at my job came to a close, I had the wonderful opportunity to train my successor. We spent several months working side-by-side, and it was a true pleasure. Her strong work ethic and quick grasp of new concepts made for a natural and effortless transition. Over the years, I had accumulated my own “tricks of the trade”—small efficiencies and lessons learned the hard way. Initially, I held back on sharing them. My thinking was that these insights were my own, and she would need to create her own toolkit, just as I had.

It was during a quiet moment of reflection that I felt the Holy Spirit’s gentle conviction. I realized I was holding back from sharing everything with a new colleague, not because she couldn’t handle it, but because I was afraid she would be more successful than me. “These are my creations,” I rationalized, “so isn’t a little selfishness okay?” The shift came when I simply put myself in her position. But as I put myself in her shoes, I acknowledged that I would have wanted my predecessor to share every pearl of wisdom and every potential pitfall. So, after confessing and repenting of my sin, I shared everything with her.

At one time or another, we all feel the pull to put ourselves first, but this tendency does not originate from God. As followers, we are called to a different way of living—one that mirrors God’s selfless nature. The Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (Philippians 2:3-4).
In a world that often prioritizes “me, me, me,” we are given the high calling to reflect a different path: a way of selfless love. This path requires a humble heart that intentionally exalts others above ourselves, fostering a deeper unity with those around us. It’s a journey of actively choosing to serve, love, and lift up our fellow man, creating a more compassionate world by showing God’s own character.

See, Jesus’s love for us was entirely selfless. He chose to set aside his divine glory and become one of us, born into humble circumstances. He lived a perfect life, yet was met with scorn and ultimately died a criminal’s death—all for the very people who despised him. Through it all, He never stopped thinking of others or His mission. He knew his purpose, and He walked in it completely.

Dear friends, do you know the unique purpose God has for your life? If you’re searching, it’s never too late to begin. All it takes is turning to God, placing your hope in Christ, and asking Him to be your savior. We all come into this world with our own issues but God, in His deep and endless love, has made a way for us to find our way back to Him through his son, Jesus. Simply believe, and He will do the rest. Unlike us, ethnicity, gender, age or economic status does not matter to God. His arms are open to “whosoever will” – that is whosoever will come after Him, take up their cross and follow Him. Thankfully, this includes us.

Selfishness is a tool in the arsenal of our enemy. Do not let him use it on you! Fight back by embodying the selfless love of God for everyone.
